Andreu Alfaro Spanish, 1929-2012

Overview

Andreu Alfaro was one of the leading figures of Spanish contemporary sculpture and a key representative of geometric abstraction in post-war Europe. Born in Valencia, he developed a largely self-taught artistic practice that focused on the relationship between form, space and light. Throughout his career, Alfaro explored the expressive possibilities of repetition, rhythm and linear structures, often working with stainless steel and aluminium. His sculptures are characterized by their elegant simplicity and dynamic interaction with the surrounding environment. During the 1960s and 1970s, he became associated with the renewal of contemporary Spanish art, exhibiting extensively both nationally and internationally. Alfaro also completed numerous monumental public commissions, many of which have become landmarks in urban spaces. His work reflects an ongoing dialogue between mathematics, architecture and visual perception. Today, he is regarded as one of the most important Spanish sculptors of the twentieth century.
