Eduardo Arroyo Spanish, 1937-2018
Eduardo Arroyo was one of Spain’s most influential contemporary artists and a prominent figure in European figurative painting. Born in Madrid, he moved to Paris in the late 1950s, where he developed an artistic language that challenged both political and artistic conventions. Associated with Narrative Figuration, Arroyo used recognizable imagery to construct works rich in irony, cultural references and social commentary. His paintings often explored themes of identity, memory and power through bold compositions and vivid colours. Beyond painting, he was also active as a writer, illustrator and stage designer. Throughout his career, Arroyo exhibited internationally and received numerous awards and honours. His independent spirit and critical perspective made him a distinctive voice within post-war European art. His work continues to be celebrated for its originality and intellectual depth.
