Georges Braque French, 1882-1963
Georges Braque was a pioneering French artist and one of the founders of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso. Born in Argenteuil, he initially worked within the Fauvist movement before developing a radically new approach to representation in the early twentieth century. Together with Picasso, he transformed the language of modern art by breaking objects and space into geometric forms and multiple viewpoints. Braque played a central role in both Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, helping to redefine the possibilities of painting. His work is noted for its balance, structural clarity and restrained colour palette. In addition to painting, he worked extensively in printmaking, sculpture and decorative arts. Following the First World War, he continued to refine his artistic vision while maintaining a strong commitment to formal experimentation. Today, he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of modern art.
