Antonio Calderara Italian, 1903-1978
Antonio Calderara was an Italian painter renowned for his contribution to geometric abstraction and minimalist art. Born in Abbiategrasso, he began his career producing figurative landscapes and intimate domestic scenes before gradually embracing abstraction during the 1950s. His mature work is characterized by subtle geometric structures, delicate tonal variations and an exceptional sensitivity to light. Calderara sought to reduce visual language to its essential elements, creating paintings that convey a sense of harmony, stillness and contemplation. Although modest in scale, his works possess remarkable depth and precision. His artistic philosophy was influenced by both modernist abstraction and a profound interest in perception. Today, Calderara is recognized as one of the most significant figures in post-war Italian abstraction.
