Sonia Delaunay 1885-1979
Sonia Delaunay was a pioneering artist whose work played a crucial role in the development of abstract art during the twentieth century. Born in Ukraine and later based in France, she worked across painting, textile design, fashion, illustration and decorative arts. Together with Robert Delaunay, she developed a vibrant artistic approach centred on colour, movement and rhythm. Her compositions are characterized by dynamic geometric forms and bold chromatic contrasts. Delaunay believed that art should extend beyond the canvas and become part of everyday life, leading her to apply abstract principles to clothing, interiors and design objects. Her innovative vision helped bridge the worlds of fine art and design. Today, she is recognized as one of the most influential female artists of the modern era and a major figure within the history of abstraction.
