Luis Feito Spanish, 1929-2021

Overview

Luis Feito was a major Spanish painter and one of the central figures of the country's post-war abstract movement. Born in Madrid, he initially studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando before developing an increasingly experimental approach to painting. His early work evolved from figurative influences towards abstraction, with a particular interest in gesture, texture and the physical qualities of paint. In the late 1950s, he became associated with the influential group El Paso, which played a decisive role in introducing a new form of expressive abstraction to Spain. Feito's paintings often combine dark tonalities, organic forms and richly worked surfaces, creating a strong sense of material intensity. Over time, his palette expanded and his compositions became increasingly luminous and refined. He spent significant periods in Paris and maintained close connections with the international avant-garde. His work was exhibited widely in Europe, the United States and Latin America. Feito remained committed throughout his career to the possibilities of abstract painting and became one of the most respected representatives of Spanish modernism.
