Mariano Fortuny was one of the most accomplished Spanish painters of the nineteenth century and an important figure in European Orientalism. Born in Reus, Catalonia, he showed exceptional artistic ability from an early age and later studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. His travels to Morocco had a profound impact on his artistic development, inspiring scenes filled with brilliant colour, intricate detail and fascination with everyday life. Fortuny became renowned for his extraordinary technical skill and his ability to capture light, fabrics and textures with remarkable precision. His paintings frequently combine historical subjects with genre scenes and Orientalist imagery. He also produced highly accomplished watercolours and drawings, demonstrating remarkable versatility.
