Nadia Léger Russian-French, 1904-1982
Nadia Léger was a Belarusian-born artist who became an important figure within the European avant-garde and the wider circle surrounding Fernand Léger. Born Nadia Khodossievitch, she studied art in Warsaw before moving to Paris, where she encountered the city's vibrant modernist scene. Her early work was influenced by Cubism and the artistic developments taking place around her. She later became closely associated with Fernand Léger, whom she married in 1952, and played an important role in preserving and promoting his artistic legacy. Nadia continued to develop her own practice, producing portraits, figurative compositions and works influenced by the visual language of modernism. She was also involved in exhibitions and cultural initiatives that brought avant-garde art to a wider audience. Her work demonstrates a combination of geometric structure, simplified forms and strong colour relationships. Beyond her own artistic production, she became an important custodian of Léger's heritage. Her contribution to twentieth-century art has increasingly been reconsidered independently from that of her husband.
