Antoine Poncet French, 1928-2022
Antoine Poncet was a French sculptor whose work developed within the tradition of modern European abstraction. Born in Paris, he came from a family deeply connected with the arts and studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts. His artistic development was strongly influenced by the work of Constantin Brancusi and other pioneers of modern sculpture. Poncet sought to reduce the human and natural forms around him to essential volumes, creating sculptures characterised by simplicity and harmony. Marble became one of his preferred materials, allowing him to achieve highly refined surfaces and fluid transitions between forms. His sculptures often suggest organic structures while remaining fundamentally abstract. Throughout his career, Poncet exhibited in France and internationally and received numerous commissions for public and private spaces. His work demonstrates a careful balance between geometric structure and natural movement. He also participated in important international sculpture exhibitions and biennials. Poncet's elegant approach established him as an important figure in the continuation of French abstract sculpture during the second half of the twentieth century.
