Eusebio Sempere Spanish, 1923-1985
Eusebio Sempere was a Spanish artist whose work played a central role in the development of geometric and kinetic art in Spain. Born in Onil, Alicante, he studied in Valencia before moving to Paris, where he encountered the international avant-garde and became interested in abstraction and optical perception. His work is characterised by precise lines, geometric structures and subtle variations of light and colour. Sempere often used repeated lines and carefully calculated arrangements to create a sense of movement and vibration. His artistic investigations connected him with the wider European tradition of kinetic and optical art. Alongside painting and drawing, he created sculptures and public works that transformed geometric structures into spatial experiences. He returned to Spain during the 1960s and became an important figure in the country's renewal of contemporary art. His work combines mathematical precision with a delicate and poetic sensibility. Today, Sempere is recognised as one of Spain's leading representatives of geometric abstraction and kinetic art.
