Esteban Vicente 1903-2001

Overview

Esteban Vicente was a Spanish-American painter whose career connected European modernism with the development of Abstract Expressionism in the United States. Born in Turégano, Spain, he studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid before moving to Paris during the 1920s. He later lived in Barcelona and Madrid before settling permanently in the United States after the Spanish Civil War. His early work was figurative, but he gradually moved towards abstraction, particularly during the 1950s. Vicente's paintings are characterised by layered fields of colour, subtle textures and carefully balanced compositions. Although associated with the first generation of the New York School, he maintained a distinctive and contemplative approach to abstraction. He frequently worked by building and scraping layers of paint, creating surfaces with considerable physical depth. Throughout his long career, he also produced collages and drawings. His work has been exhibited in major American and European institutions and is now considered an important bridge between Spanish modernism and American post-war abstraction.
