Victor Brauner Rumanian, 1903-1966

Overview

Victor Brauner was a Romanian-born painter closely associated with the Surrealist movement. After moving to Paris, he became part of the circle surrounding André Breton and developed a highly personal visual language rooted in dreams, mythology and the unconscious mind. His works often feature enigmatic figures, hybrid creatures and symbolic imagery inspired by esoteric traditions and ancient cultures. Brauner's paintings explore themes of transformation, identity and spiritual experience through imaginative compositions and vibrant colours. His distinctive iconography set him apart within Surrealism and earned him international recognition. Despite the upheavals of war and exile, he maintained a remarkably consistent artistic vision throughout his career. Today, he is considered one of the most original and poetic voices within twentieth-century Surrealism.
