Eduardo Chillida Spanish, 1924-2002
Eduardo Chillida was one of the most celebrated sculptors of the twentieth century and a leading figure in modern Spanish art. Born in San Sebastián, he initially studied architecture before dedicating himself entirely to sculpture. Throughout his career, Chillida explored the relationship between matter, space and emptiness, creating powerful works in iron, steel, stone and concrete. His sculptures often engage directly with architecture and landscape, transforming space into an active component of the artwork. Deeply influenced by Basque culture and traditional craftsmanship, he developed a unique artistic language that combines physical strength with philosophical reflection. Chillida received numerous international awards and exhibited extensively around the world. His legacy remains fundamental to the history of contemporary sculpture.
